Sleep Apnea
A healthy airway has a lot to do with a person’s overall condition, as we all require a clean, adequate supply of oxygen in order for our bodies to complete an array of necessary functions.
When the airway is not working the way it should, it can interfere with human health in a number of ways. Yet, airway issues, like sleep apnea, often go undiagnosed and untreated, because, much of the time, those affected are unaware that there is anything wrong with their airway.
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by sudden interruptions in breathing. A person with sleep apnea will often stop breathing for extended periods during sleep then will resume breathing after the interruption has passed. Depending on the severity of the condition, interruptions may be brief and occasional or frequent and extended. Often, individuals who suffer from sleep apnea are unaware of it due to being asleep when the condition manifests.
What Causes Sleep Apnea?
There are three types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, and complex sleep apnea (which is a combination of the first two types).
With obstructive sleep apnea, the airway becomes blocked during sleep.
With central sleep apnea, the brain fails to send the body correct breathing signals during sleep.
All three types of sleep apnea can be treated with the help of a dental professional, and/or an airway specialist.
